Correcting Amazon product categories: classification warnings and listing details

Is your product in a category that doesn't match what it actually is? Did you get a warning that Amazon changed your product type? Does a classification you fixed keep reverting? This article is for sellers in those situations. We break down how Amazon's "classification" works, show how to trace a warning or error back to its cause, and walk through how to fix it, how to contact Amazon when you can't fix it yourself, and what to check to keep it from happening again.

"Classification" isn't one thing: telling the three systems apart

Even when the problem sounds the same ("I want to fix my category"), the system involved differs from seller to seller. Figuring out first which system you're dealing with narrows down what you can do. This article is based on the public Help pages in Amazon.co.jp Seller Central as of September 2026. Policies and screen names can change, so please also check the latest screens and Help content.

SystemRoleWho decidesWhere to check
Browse nodeWhere the product sits in the store's hierarchy. Affects how it appears in search and browseThe seller submits a recommended value, and Amazon decides (it may change at any time)"Recommended Browse Node" (推奨されるブラウズノード) on the edit screen
Product typeA group of products that share similar attributes. Determines the listing template and the fields to fill inThe seller chooses it, but Amazon may reclassify the product based on its contentSelection when adding a product; warning code 18367
Fee categoryThe category used to calculate referral feesAmazon (it may change later)Estimated fees in inventory management

These three are not the same thing. Help gives the example of a children's book: whether it is listed under "Books" or "Toys & Hobbies," its fee category is "Books" only. Also note that Amazon's English-language Help uses an "item type keyword" field for the US market, while Japan instead classifies products by "recommended browse node." Be careful not to conflate the two when referring to overseas how-to articles.

The following three are separate from correcting a browse node.

  • Selling approval: Some categories require approval before you can list in them (see error 8026 below).
  • Adult flag: Amazon.co.jp generally prohibits the sale of adult products. In Drugstore, only products in browse nodes designated by Amazon, among cosplay, sexy lingerie, and adult goods, may be sold in the adult store to buyers who have verified their age. Media products such as books and DVDs are handled differently, for example by setting the flag according to the manufacturer's or publisher's adult rating. Listing products with sexual content (or that could be interpreted that way) without the flag is prohibited, and Amazon decides whether a product falls into that category. For details, see What to check before handling celebrity-related or adult products.
  • Dangerous goods classification: FBA dangerous goods (hazmat) are classified by a product's physical and chemical properties, which is a separate system from product type.

Why misclassification is a problem

Classification is a policy obligation, and it also determines whether buyers can find your product.

  • Detail page rules: These require every product to be classified accurately, and failing to meet the standards can lead to your selling privileges being temporarily or permanently revoked.
  • Business Solutions Agreement: The "Required Product Information" sellers must provide includes classification by product category, and Amazon may restrict access to products that are classified inappropriately.
  • Account Health Rating: The detail page rules and the ASIN creation policy count toward the rating, and anything treated as a violation can affect your score.
  • Visibility: Products not assigned to a browse node don't appear in search results or in category listings. Assigning a product to an intermediate level (a branch node) limits its visibility, and search filters (refinements) only work when the product is in the correct node.

Amazon doesn't publish how severe a single misclassification is or how many points it costs, so you can't say for sure either that "it has no effect" or that "one instance means suspension." The basic approach is to respond promptly based on what your screens show. We explain how to read the score in How to check your Account Health score.

Tracing the cause from the warning or error you see

First, check which of these matches what you're seeing.

What you seeWhat it usually meansWhat to do first
Warning code 18367Amazon classified the product under a different product type based on its contentDecide whether you agree with the recommended product type
Search suppressed (or at risk of it)The listing has been removed from search results because required values are missing or a rule was violated (category-related values may be the cause)Check the reason under "Activate listings" (出品を有効にする)
Error 8026You tried to create or modify a listing in a category that requires approval without having itCheck your selling approval status
Error 8541The submitted data conflicts with an existing ASIN in the catalogCheck "Catalog data conflicts" (カタログ情報の矛盾)
A violation appears under "Product Policy Compliance" (商品規約の遵守)The listing is being treated as a policy violationWrite down the affected ASIN, the violation name, and the action requested

Warning code 18367: the product type was changed

This warning appears when Amazon classifies a product under a product type different from the one you specified, based on content such as the product name, description, and bullet points. If you agree with the product type shown, select the recommended product type and resubmit the SKU (using the latest template if you manage listings in bulk). If you believe your own choice is correct, confirm that the three fields (the product name, bullet points, and description) all match the product's actual use, then resubmit.

Search suppressed: address the reason shown

Go to the Inventory menu > Manage All Inventory (全在庫の管理) > Activate listings, choose the quick filter "At risk of being suppressed" (検索対象外になる可能性がある) or "Search suppressed ASINs" (検索対象外のASINを検索する), and click the issue for each SKU to see the reason and how to fix it. The cause isn't always classification: listings can also be suppressed because images or other information are missing or because they violate the detail page rules. Changes are said to take up to 48 hours to take effect.

Error 8026: no selling approval

This can appear even if you were approved before, because the approval lapsed after a long period of non-use or was revoked due to a policy violation or similar. Search for the product under "Add a Product" (商品登録), and if you see "Apply to sell" (出品許可を申請), gather the documents requested, such as an invoice dated within the last 180 days and photos of the product, and apply (review is said to take 2 to 7 business days). Don't try to get around this by moving the product to a category that doesn't require approval (we explain why later).

Error 8541: conflict with the catalog

This appears when the brand, product name, or other data you submitted conflicts with what is registered for an existing ASIN. Even if you only meant to fix the classification, any brand or product name columns left in your file will be submitted too and can trigger this error, so send only the fields you're changing as a partial update. Check the details under "Catalog data conflicts" in Catalog > Complete Your Drafts (不備のある出品を完成) > Fix Listing Information (商品情報を修正), and if the error is on the catalog side, ask Technical Support to fix it and include evidence. If you suspect a duplicate ASIN, also see How to resolve duplicate ASINs.

A violation appears under "Product Policy Compliance"

The public Help pages don't show the name under which classification violations are displayed or the wording of the notification emails, and these can change. Write down what the notification actually says without filling in gaps by guesswork. If a listing has been removed or deactivated, check the "Product Policy Compliance" tab on the Account Health (アカウント健全性) page; if nothing appears there, check suppressed listings in inventory management and Performance Notifications (パフォーマンス通知). Then either appeal or correct the listing as instructed.

If you're asked for a plan of action when appealing, it generally helps to organize it into three parts (Amazon does not prescribe a specific format): (1) the cause (only facts you've confirmed internally, e.g., "we reused the node ID from another product's row in a bulk file"), (2) corrective actions (identify the ASINs named in the notification and any other SKUs listed the same way, and state the scope of what you corrected to the proper leaf node and the dates), and (3) preventive measures (who checks the node with which tool at the time of listing, and where it is recorded). If you believe the determination itself is wrong, file a dispute rather than an appeal that assumes a correction, and present the evidence that your classification is correct. We explain how to write one in How to put together a plan of action.

A violation may be removed from the Account Health page if a dispute confirms the determination was wrong, if Amazon decides based on your appeal that it was unintentional and forgivable, or if you have taken the required corrective actions, among other cases. Simply closing or deleting the listing does not make the violation go away. For warnings about inaccurate product information in general, see Responding to inaccurate or inappropriate content warnings, and if your account has been suspended, see The full picture, from suspension to reinstatement appeal.

What to check before making corrections

Checking the following points first reduces the chance of "I fixed it, but the warning came back."

Pre-correction checklist

  • Do the product name, bullet points, and description all describe the same product as the actual item? (These are the identifying fields Amazon uses for classification)
  • Is the node you're choosing an end-level leaf node, and is there only one? (Multiple assignments are allowed only for exceptions such as media products and unisex products)
  • For products where you selected "Other (xxx)" (その他(xxx)), is an "Improve listing quality" (出品情報の改善) alert still showing?
  • In your bulk file, did you submit a product type or node ID copied from another product's row without changing it?
  • Does a variation family include products that are fundamentally different from the parent?
  • Is the product actively listed and active under your own account?
  • Is it an ASIN shared with other sellers, or one another company has enrolled in Brand Registry?
  • If you're fixing things in bulk, is it set to partial update?

Help gives an example of a "similar product type" error, in which a detail page for women's leggings has women's slacks as a variation. Adding a child that is fundamentally different from the parent is prohibited under the ASIN creation policy, so check your parent-child combinations too.

Steps to correct the category

STEP 1. Find the correct node

In the Product Classifier (called "Select product category" (商品カテゴリーを選択) in Help), narrow down from the store or search by keyword, then choose a classification. If you previously used the Browse Tree Guide (BTG), those files can reportedly still be used, but Help recommends switching to the Product Classifier, which reflects the latest site structure. Think in terms of the departments buyers browse through, and if there are several candidates, also consider whether the refinements match the product's features.

STEP 2. Identify products with the same cause

Even if you fix only the product named in the notification, other products listed with the same file or process may have the same error. Professional sellers can reduce rework by using the Category Listings Report (カテゴリー別出品レポート) to list the recommended browse nodes already submitted and checking whether the same node ID has been applied across products with different uses before making fixes. Depending on the size of your catalog, the report can take up to 3 days to generate. If you have more than 30 product types or more than 10,000 rows, the report downloads as multiple files, so check every file to make sure you don't miss anything.

STEP 3. Fix listings one at a time

  1. From the Inventory menu > Manage All Inventory, find the listing by ASIN, SKU, or product name
  2. Open "Edit details" (詳細を編集) > "Product Details" (商品の詳細) (if you can't find it, go there via the "Suggest a change to product information" (商品情報の変更を提案する) link)
  3. Click "Edit," change the browse path and node under "Recommended Browse Node," and save

Screen names aren't consistent; some Help pages, for example, say "Manage Products" > "Edit" > the "Vital Info" or "Details" tab. If you get lost, look for the field named "Recommended Browse Node."

STEP 4. Fix listings in bulk

Use the "product spreadsheet" (商品スプレッドシート) currently recommended in Help: enter the SKUs, set the listing action to "Edit (Partial Update)," enter only the fields you're updating, such as the recommended browse node, and submit. If you leave the listing action blank, it is treated as a "full update (Create or Replace)," and your listing is replaced with the values you entered. For the older category-specific inventory files, Help says to select "Partial Update" in the "update_delete" column, but submitting an old template may produce errors in the processing report, and Help asks sellers to switch to the product spreadsheet. Only Professional sellers can use bulk listing templates. To be safe, submit a few listings using the latest template, confirm there are no errors in the processing report, and then submit the rest.

STEP 5. Confirm the change took effect

Check not only inventory management but also the category shown on the detail page as buyers see it. A single node can have multiple paths (browse paths), so if what you see isn't what you expected, compare it against the node ID you looked up.

When a fix reverts or you can't fix it yourself

Help describes the following mechanisms.

  • Amazon may reclassify product types with automated algorithms, and browse nodes may also change at any time
  • For ASINs sold by multiple sellers, Amazon automatically chooses the best information from each seller's data
  • For ASINs enrolled in Brand Registry, the brand owner's information is more likely to be displayed, and suggested changes won't necessarily be approved

Amazon doesn't disclose why the classification of a particular product reverts, so rather than making the same fix over and over, consider the following options.

Ask Amazon to make the change

If you can't update it through the screens or files, use Contact Us to provide the details needed to change the category. Some guidance says you can submit an update request through a "category update tool," but it doesn't say which menu it's in, so if you can't find it by searching Help, submit your request through Contact Us. For detail page correction requests, the listed evidence includes the URL of a manufacturer's website that clearly shows the change and the product code (such as the JAN), a high-resolution product image showing the change and the product code, and an image of the original packaging showing the product code and the fields that need to change; requests without valid evidence are said not to be accepted. It isn't stated whether this applies to classification requests, but having these ready makes it easier to explain your case.

Here is a sample request (a hypothetical example, not an actual case).

Please change the browse node for the product below.
Product: (ASIN) (SKU) (product code, such as the JAN)
Current classification: (the path shown on the detail page)
Requested classification: (the path and node ID found with "Select product category")
Reason: This product is a walking leash for dogs. It currently appears under "Clothing & Fashion Accessories," but we believe the pet supplies department is appropriate. The product name, bullet points, and description also describe it as a product for dogs.
Supporting documents: We have attached the URL of the manufacturer's product page, which shows the change and the product code, and an image of the packaging showing the product code.
Background: On (date), we submitted a change to the recommended browse node from the edit screen, but it was not reflected, so we are contacting you.

For tips on how to explain your situation, also see How to organize your case before contacting Technical Support.

If you think the fee category is wrong

In inventory management, click the value for "Estimated fee per unit sold" (販売された商品あたりの手数料の見積り額), then click the info icon next to the referral fee to see the fee category. If you believe you were charged incorrectly, use the referral fee tool (販売手数料ツール) to check whether you're eligible for reimbursement. Fee categories and rates can be revised, so check the latest Help.

For another seller's ASIN or an ASIN enrolled in Brand Registry

For a Brand Registry ASIN you sell on alongside other sellers, information provided by the brand reportedly can't be edited by Technical Support, so report errors through "Report a Violation" (不正または違反を報告). If another company's ASIN that you don't sell is classified in violation of the rules, you can report it through the same channel (the results of the investigation aren't disclosed).

What not to do: don't use classification as a tactic

  • Putting products in a category that looks cheaper on fees: Amazon decides the fee category, so changing the browse node won't necessarily change your referral fee, and a classification that doesn't match the actual product may be treated as inappropriate classification.
  • Moving a product to a different category to avoid selling approval: Moving a product to a department that doesn't match what it is may be judged as deliberate manipulation of search and browse. Apply for any approval you need.
  • Chasing visibility in unrelated departments: Deliberately manipulating search and browse results, such as by entering misleading or irrelevant information, is prohibited by the Help page on prohibited seller activities and the Seller Code of Conduct.
  • Listing products with sexual content (or that could be interpreted that way) without an adult flag: As mentioned at the beginning, this is prohibited.
  • Deleting the listing and re-creating the detail page: Creating a page that duplicates an existing detail page is prohibited by the detail page rules and under prohibited seller activities (duplicate detail pages). Deleting a listing doesn't make a violation go away, and re-creating it without fixing the cause may lead to the same problem.

Being in the correct leaf node and appearing in filtered searches is the foundation of visibility.

Checking habits that prevent recurrence

Checks at listing time, weekly, and monthly

  • When listing a new product: after writing the three fields, look up the classification with "Select product category" and record the node ID you chose and why
  • Weekly: review the recommendations under "Improve listing quality" (出品情報の改善) (Help also recommends checking weekly). At the same time, check "Activate listings" and "Product Policy Compliance" for anything new
  • Monthly (Professional sellers): review the classification data you've submitted using the Category Listings Report and compare it with how the detail pages of your main products appear

The Category Listings Report includes only the data you submitted, so it may not show classifications that Amazon changed on its side. "Review listing changes" (出品情報の変更確認), available to brand owners, also no longer shows browse node updates. Open the detail pages to check for changes in classification.

Frequently asked questions

Q. I made a mistake unintentionally. Is it still a problem if it wasn't on purpose?

A. The rules require accurate classification regardless of intent, so it still needs to be corrected. A violation on the Account Health page may be removed if you appeal and Amazon decides it was unintentional and forgivable. However, a violation removed other than through a dispute claiming the determination was wrong may still count toward repeat violations for 180 days.

Q. I don't know which category is correct.

A. Look for candidates in the Product Classifier, and choose based on whether it's a leaf node and whether the refinements match the product's features. Consider "Other (xxx)" only when there is no suitable leaf node.

Q. Can I correct the category with an Individual selling plan?

A. With either the Individual or Professional plan, you can submit a category change from the edit screen in inventory management. Individual sellers can't use bulk listing templates, so they need to correct listings one at a time.

Q. How long does it take for a change to take effect after I contact Amazon?

A. Amazon doesn't publish how long it takes to respond to category change requests. Detail page information is said to be updated within 48 hours once a change is approved; if it isn't, another seller's or the brand's information may have been chosen instead.

Summary

  • Classification involves browse nodes, product types, and fee categories; selling approval, the adult flag, and dangerous goods are separate systems
  • Trace the cause from warning codes, error numbers, and what appears under "Product Policy Compliance"
  • Before correcting, check that the three fields are consistent, that there is one leaf node, and that partial update is set, and fix products with the same cause together
  • If you can't fix it or it keeps reverting, contact Amazon with supporting documents
  • Don't use classification as a tactic for fees or visibility, and build checks into your routine work

If you verify the causes of a misclassification one by one, the path to fixing it becomes clear. When a notification is hard to interpret, write down without omission the violation name, the affected ASIN, and the action it asks for, and if necessary, work through it while checking with Amazon Help or Technical Support.
